October 2015 Newsletter

Dear Parents,

Welcome Fall.
There are a lot of things happening this month at Sunset.
Thanks to all the parents who purchased books from Usborne. Our book sale was an amazing success. We sold over $1,000.00 dollars in books. Due to this each of our classrooms will have new books! Thank you for bringing the joy of reading to our center as well as your homes. Depending on parent fee back I would love to have another book fair around the holidays.
Most of you by now know that Rachel has left the center to work more as an independent consultant with Mary Kay. She is also doing more with urban gardening. We wish her the best of luck in her new adventure. She will be missed. Rachel was with Sunset for more than 9 years.
We do have two new faces up front. Mr. Bryan is my Administrate Assistant. He can help you out with statements and any forms that you may need. He also knows how to work the fingerprint system if you need your finger prints done. Bryan is very computer savvy and a great asset to Sunset.
Ms. Nina is our Educational Coordinator. She is in charge of teaching, developing and evaluating our S.T.E.M program here at Sunset. You will see her helping out in classrooms a lot as well as helping me with Staff files and education. She has 21 years of experience in classrooms as well as administration. Nina was actually my oldest daughters teacher many years back. I’m excited to have her apart of our Sunset Family.
Please make both of them feel welcome.
I wanted to apologize for our front door. Finally the door is working and is locked. The system received an upgrade and with that parents and grandparents will need to get their fingerprints redone. I apologize for the inconvenience. Bryan, myself or Helen can get you re-fingerprinted. When you scan your fingerprint at the door you will hear two sets of beeps. Please wait for the second set of beeps to open the door.
We have a few upcoming events in October.
Parents night out is October 16th from 6-8pm. Children will enjoy crafts, dinner and a movie.
Admission is 2 bags of candy or goodies for our Fall festival.
Sign up sheets will be on classroom doors. We can only take a many children as we have staff.
Sunset will have a Bake Sale October 15th and 16th.  Teachers and staff will provide holiday treats for sale to help with costs of our Fall festival. The Bake sale will be from 3:00-6:00pm. Thank you for your help.
We will host our annual fall Festival Friday, October 30th from6:15-8:00pm
Kids and parents please come dressed in your favorite costumes. No  scary masks or weapons please.
Please come for fall treats, fun and games. You are welcome to bring family and friends. The more the merrier.
One last note,
The bus driver have asked that you please do not park in the red zone. It’s hard to get the children safely in and out of the vans.
I appreciate your help in this matter.
Thank you for all you do.

Panda One’s
Dear Panda One Families,

We hope everyone had a safe and fun Labor Day weekend! With the fall season already upon us, and winter fast approaching, we are gearing up for shorter daylight hours, and cooler outdoor temperatures. With that in mind, we ask that you please take inventory of your child’s belongings and replace any apparel that is too small or not season-appropriate.

Last month we welcomed a new assistant teacher, Miss Erendira, to the Panda Room. Erendira (aka “Ere” or “E”) graduated from Longmont High in 2014, and is currently pursing a degree in Early Childhood Education at Front Range Community College. She will be working the 8:30am to 5:30pm shift Monday throughFriday in the Panda One classroom.

Your invited… Sunset Academy’s Annual Fall Festival will take place on Friday, October 30th at 6:15pm. Don your costume and join us for tricks, treats, games, and fun!

In an effort to offset some of the cost involved in putting on this year’s Fall Festival, we will be hosting a bake sale and a Parent’s Night Out. The bake sale will be held on Thursday, October 15th and Friday, October 16th. Show your support by purchasing a treat or two for yourself, your child, a family member, or a friend. Parents Night Out is scheduled for the evening of Friday, October 16th; the cost for participating in the Parent’s Night Out event is two bags of treats.

The fall sessions of Stretch-n-Grow, Musicare, and Soccer Shots are in full swing, and the children are having a blast! If you think your child would enjoy participating in one or more of these programs, please see Miss Becka for registration information.

Curriculum themes for the month of October will include: The Five Senses; Dental Health and Hand Washing; Fire Safety; and Spiders and Bats. For our five senses theme we will do a rock-scrubbing sensory activity; the children will feel the water on their skin, see the bubbles forming and popping, and smell the scent of the soap (no taste-testing allowed). During week two we will learn about the importance of dental health and hand washing. We will be adding toothbrushes to our art supplies and allowing the children to paint freely with them instead of paintbrushes. We will practice scrubbing with our toothbrushes, and we will learn a new song, “Tops and Bottoms”,  to sing when we wash our hands. Week three is all about fire safety. The children will engage in a role-playing activity and practice ‘putting out a fire’ (see below). The final week of the month will focus on a spiders and bats theme. The children will spend the week learning all about spiders and bats. We will also be creating some decor for our Annual Fall Festival.

“Tops and Bottoms” (to the tune of Frere Jacques)
Tops and bottoms,
Tops and bottoms,
In between,
In between,
Rub your hands together,
Rub your hands together,
Now they’re clean,
Now they’re, clean.

Be A Firefighter (Vinegar and Baking Soda Experiment)
This experiment teaches science: observation, and chemical reaction; math: measuring, and counting; and aids in the development of hand-eye coordination and motor development. It’s also a wonderful sensory experience.

You will need:
Several clear, plastic cups; paper flame cut-outs; enough baking soda to fill each cup 1/3 full; white vinegar, a miniature spray bottle, and a firefighter costume (optional).

Fill spray bottle with vinegar*
Fill each cup 1/3 full with baking soda
Place one paper flame cut-out into each cup
Child can ‘put the fire out’ by spraying vinegar onto the flames

*You may need a different vessel for the vinegar if the spray bottle isn’t capable of delivering enough vinegar to cause a reaction with the baking soda.

We would like to wish our new friend Kevin a belated Happy Birthday; Kevin turned two on September 27th. Happy Birthday to Mia, Greyson, and Wendy as well;  they will be turning two on October 26thOctober 28th and October 31st, respectively.

Miss Becka is going on vacation! Beginning on Friday, October 1st, we will have a substitute teacher, Miss Ashley, assisting in the Panda One classroom. Miss Ashley will be working the 7:30am-3:00pm shift. Miss Becka will return on Tuesday, October 13th.

Happy Fall!
The children have been busy creating the colors of Autumn by mixing red and yellow and discussing the changes of nature and what the animals are busy doing.  You may have noticed the green leaves on our Brown Bear Family Tree have changed colors!
We are super excited to get a visit from the Police Department on October 5th and the Fire Department on October 21st. The children will see and hear firsthand all the important tools of the trade for each, and how to handle emergencies and stay safe.
We will spend the month learning about Health and Safety with hands on activities.
As always we will continue to work on letter recognition/sounds and number recognition. Please ask your child to read their Letter of the Week book to reinforce letter sounds at home.
They are all so excited to sign themselves in each morning we rarely need to remind anyone of this responsibility.
We feel that they have already grown by leaps and bounds in such a short time. The classroom is a nice calm learning environment and the children are so eager to learn and experience new activities. It is a joy to work with all your children and see the excitement in their eyes. It is going to be a wonderful school year.
If you have any questions or concerns please don’t hesitate to call or ask.
Remember to hug ’em, love ’em, laugh together and Read! Read! Read!… The time goes fast!
